We Need You on Thursday!!!
Submitted by brandon collins on Tue, 2009-06-16 00:21. MiscThe Charlottesville Center for Peace and Justice needs your help and participation! For years we have held a weekly demonstration in front of the Federal Building on Ridge St. to protest wars, bombings, and occupations. This is a critical action performed by the peace center, it shows Charlottesville that there are still people out here opposed to the militarism projected globally by the United States.
The demonstrations take place on Thursdays at 5 o'clock. Lately, only a few people have attended, WE NEED MORE PARTICIPATION to keep this long going tradition going. This is a fun activity, lots of honking and waving from supportive 5 o'clock drivers. I particularly enjoy waving to the busses as they pass by. In the post Obama election era, it is more important than ever to show that there are still 2 wars going on in Iraq and Afghanistan and an almost secret bombing campaign in Pakistan. Despite the message of "change" being promoted by the new administration, very little has changed regarding the war in Iraq, and the real changes in Afghanistan and Pakistan have been those towards increased military action, and increased civilian and military casualities.
We think that this makes it more important than ever to show Charlottesville that there is dissent, that we won't sit by while the wars and bombings continue.
PLEASE JOIN US on Thursdays in front of the Federal Building from 5:00 to 6:00, those who consistently show up are in extremely small numbers, leaving the Thursday demonstrations close to being a thing of the past.
Stand Up For Peace!

A Plan to End Wars
Submitted by davidswanson on Fri, 2009-07-03 13:28. Iran | IraqBy David Swanson
There are a million and one things that people can do to try to end the U.S. wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, and to prevent new ones in Iran and elsewhere, as well as to close U.S. military bases in dozens of other nations around the world. Certain people are skilled at or interested in particular approaches, and nobody should be discouraged from contributing to the effort in their preferred ways. Far too often proposals to work for peace are needlessly framed as attacks on all strategies except one. But where new energy can be created or existing resources redirected, it is important that they go where most likely to succeed. » read more »
Waking from Madison's Nightmare
Submitted by davidswanson on Thu, 2009-07-02 21:47. NewsBy David Swanson
The book I just read is in the running, in my estimation, for second-best text on how to undo the imperial presidency. (Can't be first, of course.) It's called "Madison's Nightmare: How Executive Power Threatens American Democracy," by Peter M. Shane, and it's much more about what the problem is than how to solve it, but the two things are not really separable, and the analysis of the problem here is invaluable. » read more »
Italy Declares Independence from U.S. Military
Submitted by davidswanson on Wed, 2009-07-01 13:30. NewsBy David Swanson
Do they have a fourth of July in Italy? That's not a trick question. This July 4th, Italians plan to gather in Vicenza to take nonviolent action aimed at freeing Italy from U.S. occupation and opposing the proposed construction of an enormous new U.S. military base in a town already swarming with U.S. troops stationed at existing bases. For years now, a major campaign organized by local residents has resisted the construction of the new base. The history of this campaign is chronicled in English here and here. A local referendum voted 95 percent against the base. A leader of the opposition to the base has been elected to the local government. An Italian prime minister has been temporarily thrown out of power. Local activists and members of parliament have visited Washington to oppose the base, and testified before the U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs on April 23, 2009. The European media has been unable to avoid the story. » read more »
